Multilingual telecollaboration: working together remotely to solve complex problems in several languages
Project led by Elsa Chachkine (senior lecturer of the French module of the international Cnam masters), Eva dessein (Senior Lecturer in French, Massachusetts Institute of Technology), Isabelle Salengros (enseignante-chercheuse à l’École des Ponts ParisTech), Per Urlaub (Professor at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Director of Global Languages).
Participants : Cnam international masters students and MIT students for the first experiment. The second experiment will also involve students from the Ponts et Chaussées engineering school.
Aim of the project: As part of their fle course, students from 3 institutions – Cnam, MIT and Ponts Paris Tech – solve problems collaboratively, remotely and in French. However, at key stages in the problem-solving process, they use other languages in their repertoire (English, Spanish, Arabic, Persian, etc.) and tools such as automatic translators and multilingual dictionaries. The aim of the teachers involved in this project is to understand whether the use of other languages and digital tools can maximise students’ comprehension and expression processes, and thus improve collaboration.
How : Via Zoom 6/11, 13/11, 20/11, 27/11, 4/12 2023 from 5pm to 6pm (French time). To join, please drop an email to elsa DOT chachkine AT lecnam DOT net.
